Recently, solid-state battery-related technologies have frequently made progress, attracting industry attention. For example, Zhiji Automobile, a subsidiary of SAIC Group, announced that the newly released Zhiji L6 is equipped with the first-generation Lightyear solid-state battery, and GAC Group also announced the progress of all-solid-state battery technology and is expected to be equipped on Haopin models in 2026. superior.
As power batteries iterate towards high energy density, solid-state battery technology has become a "must-have" for domestic and overseas car companies. Zhang Xiang, visiting professor at the Yellow River Institute of Science and Technology and director of the Vodafone Digital Automotive International Cooperation Research Center, said in an interview with a reporter from Securities Daily: "Based on the current experimental results, the energy density of solid-state batteries can reach 4 to 5 times that of traditional batteries. , is regarded as the commanding heights of competition in power battery technology. Chinese car companies have taken the lead in launching models equipped with solid-state batteries. At present, the solid-state battery industry is only in its infancy. Relying on the advantages of my country's new energy vehicle industry, Chinese car companies are expected to achieve success in the field of solid-state batteries. Take the lead and promote the further development of China’s new energy automobile industry.”
"The global research and development of solid-state batteries has lasted for more than 20 years, which is earlier than the development of currently widely used lithium-ion batteries. Compared with traditional liquid lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries have the advantages of greatly improved safety and long cruising range. However, solid-state batteries have not yet been applied on a large scale, mainly because the process problems have not been solved and the production cost is high," Zhang Xiang told reporters.
Japanese car companies were the first to start in the field of solid-state batteries, and Chinese car companies were the latecomers. From the perspective of the global competition landscape, all car companies and battery manufacturers are actively investing in research and development, and China has the largest number of companies participating, including traditional battery companies, start-up battery companies, and vehicle companies.
"Solid-state batteries are still far away from the 'first year' of industrialization. Most of the current products fall into the category of semi-solid-state batteries. Judging from the progress announced by many car companies and suppliers, large-scale delivery has not yet been achieved, and market retention is low. There are currently no industry statistics on the number of vehicles, the effect of use remains to be seen, and production costs need to be further reduced. It may take 4 to 5 years to truly mature," Zhang Xiang said.
The low-altitude economy is taking off and will boost the development of the solid-state battery industry. A research report from Minmetals Securities shows that the low-altitude economy requires batteries with high energy density, high power, and high safety. Batteries iterating toward high energy density will help the low-altitude economy gradually realize commercialization.
The solid-state battery industry chain includes upstream materials and equipment such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, midstream battery packaging integration and power management system solution design, and downstream application fields such as new energy vehicles, consumer electronics, energy storage, and electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. At present, many listed companies in China are making arrangements upstream and downstream of the industrial chain.
