On November 7, 2024, the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) announced the results of the 2024 "Battery Passport" pilot projects. This latest round featured ten selected projects, with participation from several leading global battery manufacturers. CATL's Shenxing Battery and CTP Battery were both chosen, making them part of the "Battery Passport" pilot initiative and underscoring CATL's global leadership in advancing a more transparent and sustainable battery supply chain.
In January 2023, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) presented the first set of results from its "Battery Passport" concept validation projects. The development and promotion of the "Battery Passport" have been pivotal in setting sustainable development standards for the global battery industry, filling regulatory gaps, and contributing to a greener future. After the successful completion of the initial concept validation projects in 2023, the alliance announced in June that leading global battery manufacturers, accounting for over 80% of the global electric vehicle battery market, would lead the second phase of "Battery Passport" pilot projects.
CATL's Shenxing Battery and CTP Battery each earned their own "Battery Passport" in the second round of pilot projects, demonstrating exceptional performance throughout the process. Both projects showed a carbon footprint (HMA) calculation of around 49 kgCO2eq/kWh, meaning that for every kWh of battery produced, only 49 kg of CO2 equivalent is emitted. This impressive result not only underscores CATL's capability in delivering sustainable, high-quality battery solutions to customers but also highlights the company's substantial efforts in enhancing transparency, traceability, and meeting its environmental commitments.
In recent years, CATL has been actively driving the GBA "Battery Passport" initiative while also playing a key role in advancing industry standards, establishing a model for best practices through tangible efforts. To date, CATL has obtained carbon-neutral production certification at nine of its factories. Additionally, through innovative digital tools like "Times Carbon Chain" and "CREDIT," the company is providing solutions to reduce carbon emissions across the entire supply chain.
Inga Petersen, Executive Director of the GBA, commented: "The results of the 2024 'Battery Passport' pilot projects are highly encouraging. Top global battery manufacturers have actively engaged their supply chains and submitted reports in line with common sustainability goals, clearly showcasing the collective commitment to improving transparency and sustainability, as envisioned in the '2030 GBA Vision'."
Jiang Li, Vice President and Board Secretary of CATL, remarked: "The future of the battery industry hinges on the joint efforts of all stakeholders in sustainability and recycling. CATL is honored to be leading the way in this regard. We are committed to actively engaging in the 'Battery Passport' initiative and GBA's efforts to contribute to a sustainable future for the battery industry."
