National Forklift Safety Day is celebrated on June 14th every year. Our professional team actively creates and fosters a safe working environment, and we are proud to be a part of the national focus on forklift charger safety.
"Regardless of where you work, everyone should have a safe working environment. Our commitment is to support our customers in achieving this goal." With that in mind, let's discuss some recommendations on how to safely charge forklift battery:
I have listed the following potential sources of danger:
The batteries are heavy.
The batteries contain highly corrosive sulfuric acid, which can splash on personnel involved in battery maintenance or replacement.
The batteries release highly explosive hydrogen gas as the charging process nears completion.
Contact with the batteries can cause short circuits, resulting in burns to unprotected skin.
To prevent these hazards, I suggest the following methods for charging forklift battery charger:
Your operations must establish detailed safety protocols – employees should receive training to ensure they always follow the recommended procedures safely. The training should include emergency procedures. Unauthorized personnel should not be allowed to charge or replace batteries on electric forklifts without proper training.
Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when performing any hazardous tasks.
If the battery temperature exceeds 115 degrees Fahrenheit, allow the battery to cool before charging or operating.
Ensure the proper electrolyte level. Do not overfill.
Create a safe and well-equipped battery charging area (also known as a battery room).
Always use appropriately rated battery chargers for industrial forklift batteries. Using the correct charger helps prevent battery damage, ensures optimal charging, and creates a safer working environment.
Additionally, I recommend that the battery charging area should include the following:
Posted warning signs.
Adequate fire protection.
Sufficient and readily available water for rinsing and neutralizing spilt electrolytes.
An eyewash station with a water flow for at least 15 minutes.
Well-ventilated storage area to disperse flammable hydrogen gas.
Telephone.
