Lithium battery giant Samsung SDI showed off its latest battery technology at the SNE Battery Day show in Seoul, South Korea. Samsung SDI said its first solid-state batteries have been delivered to electric vehicle manufacturers and tested for about six months.
The Samsung SDI vice president said there is strong interest from automakers in solid-state batteries because they are smaller, lighter and safer than current electric vehicle batteries. He also added that solid-state batteries are expensive to produce, so they will initially be mainly used in high-end luxury electric vehicles with a range of more than 600 miles (about 966 kilometers).
It is understood that Samsung SDI has developed Super-Gap solid-state battery technology to increase the energy density by 40% to 900Wh/L. The Super-Gap solid-state battery uses a sulphide solid-state electrolyte and no anode configuration, and the battery life is expected to reach 20 years. In addition, the Samsung SDI also has 9-minute ultra-fast charging technology.
It is worth noting that on solid-state batteries, SAIC also came to the latest news: On July 29, SAIC held the first interim shareholders' meeting in 2024, and Jia Jianxu, the new president of SAIC, revealed that the all-solid-state battery has opened the 500-day production plan and entered the countdown to production.
Previous news shows that SAIC all-solid-state battery based on polymer-inorganic compound electrolyte technology route, SAIC Qingtao's first all-solid-state battery production line has been approved, planned to be completed by the end of 2025, the first phase of production capacity planning 0.5GWh, the first phase of the product energy density can reach 400Wh/kg or more. The second stage will break through 500Wh/kg.
Saic has a "three-step" strategy for solid-state batteries: in the first stage, the product liquid content is 10%, which is the light-year battery that has been applied to Zhiji L6.
The second stage, the product liquid content of 5%, is expected to start next year, including Zhiji and other SAIC pure electric/hybrid models;
In the third stage, the product liquid content is reduced to 0, that is, the all-solid-state battery, which is planned to be mass-produced in 2026.
Toyota Motor has also pledged to begin mass production of solid-state batteries in 2027, and said its first model with solid-state batteries will be a high-end electric vehicle under the Lexus brand.
Domestically, it chooses the transition from semi-solid state batteries to all-solid state batteries, and is currently leading the world in semi-solid state batteries.
