What Is Tesla Destination Charging? Supercharging vs. Destination Charging and Charging Times

When you own a Tesla, when you are traveling or going out, you will need to find charging points in some public places such as restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, etc., usually a Tesla wall ev charger, and it is in the parking space. In situations like this, Tesla's convenient solution is called Tesla Destination Charging. Today we will take a look at what the Tesla destination charging is, what is the difference between it and the Tesla supercharging stations, and how long it takes to use it. Help you plan your trip.

How Tesla Destination Charging Works

Tesla Destination Charging is largely accomplished with the same Level 2 hardware that you'd find in a home charging installation, using the same kind of 240V electrical infrastructure that underpins large household appliances. Much faster than the Level 1 trickle charging from a standard wall outlet but not in the same league as Level 3 Superchargers, Tesla Destination Charging fulfills a useful niche in topping up range. Destination Chargers are meant to boost range during a stop at your destination (such as spending a night at a hotel), so you're ready to go after your stay.

Benefits of Tesla Destination Charging

That niche is in providing moderate amounts of juice on the go without requiring an extra stop. If your destination can charge your vehicle the same way it could charge in your garage, you can go further afield without stopping at a Supercharger, or simply keep a much larger margin of power in your battery.

Imagine you're going to see a movie. Instead of making a detour to visit a Supercharger station and waiting 20 minutes, you could find a theater with a destination charger in the parking lot, getting a couple of hours' worth of range without going out of your way.

What's the Difference Between a Tesla Supercharger and Destination Charger?

  • Tesla Destination Charging allows a Tesla vehicle to charge up while sitting in its parking spot, provided that spot has a charger, whether that's at the mall, the office, or a restaurant. Unlike Tesla's Superchargers, these stations are sold to businesses to provide convenient.

  • A Destination Charger is much less powerful and will charge your vehicle several times slower than a Supercharger. Superchargers are currently the largest and most reliable network of DC fast chargers in the U.S., and they can put hundreds of miles of range into current Tesla models in roughly a half-hour.

  • Destination Chargers will take multiple hours to do the same, though their purpose is largely to supplement the Superchargers, which form the long-distance road trip backbone of the Tesla charging network. If you need to recharge quickly, a Supercharger is a better choice. If you have some time to accumulate miles more slowly, a Destination Charger might be a good option.

How Long Does Tesla Destination Charging Take?

tesla charger time

Tesla says its Wall Connector can charge at a maximum speed of 11.5 kW, meaning it can take roughly three hours to add a hundred miles of range, depending on conditions and the vehicle you're charging. For reference, a base Model 3 has a 58-kWh battery pack, and an 11.5-kW charge rate will pump in 11.5 kWh of juice in one hour.

According to Tesla a maximum of 44 miles of range per hour can be added, though even in ideal conditions it should be said that batteries charge slower the closer they are to fully charged.

Tesla destination charging stations are mostly located in cities where electric vehicles are common. You can find the location of the charging station through the Tesla website, and the Tesla car can navigate to the various charging stations. Many places now offer free destination chargers, but others set their own electricity rates. Even then, secondary charging is usually much cheaper than gasoline.

The Tesla Destination Charging provides a convenient way to charge in certain situations. With proper planning, you can use these charging stations to keep your vehicle fully charged while you are out and about.
