On November 25, Several media outlets reported that Samsung is set to build an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in the Czech Republic. This move marks the establishment of another battery factory in Europe by Samsung, further solidifying its position in the growing electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, including its contributions to Energy Storage Solutions critical for efficient battery use and grid stability.
Previously, Samsung had publicly stated that constructing battery factories in Europe would allow the company to better meet local market demand, shorten transportation distances and times, reduce logistics costs, and improve operational efficiency and market competitiveness. This strategic investment also aligns with the broader European push for Energy Storage Solutions, ensuring that Samsung’s innovations in battery technology can support both EV adoption and renewable energy integration.
Before the Czech factory, Samsung had already established three battery plants in Hungary. The first plant is located in the suburbs of Budapest, while the second and third plants are both situated in Göd.
Earlier in 2024, Samsung SDI finalized investment plans for the construction of its third battery plant in Hungary. According to sources, the company is expected to invest more than 6 trillion Korean won (approximately 32.46 billion RMB) this year to expand its overall facilities, with over 1 trillion Korean won (around 5.41 billion RMB) allocated for the third factory.
Additionally, Samsung SDI is expanding its second plant in Hungary, with completion expected by September. This expansion will support the supply of batteries for Hyundai's electric vehicles to be launched in Europe between 2026 and 2032. These batteries will feature square cells with high-nickel cathodes containing more than 91% nickel and anodes with over 10% silicon, or silicon-carbon nanocomposites.
