Tesla has announced plans to deploy its highly anticipated V4 Supercharger cabinets, capable of delivering up to 500 kW of charging power, offering EV users an unprecedented fast-charging experience. According to Tesla, the first batch of sites equipped with V4 Supercharger cabinets has already entered the permitting stage and is expected to officially open to the public next year.
While the current Model Y can still charge at a maximum speed of 250 kW, Tesla’s newly announced 500 kW Superchargers will boost charging speeds by 30% for the upcoming Juniper update and the Cybertruck.
A Supercharger station consists of two main components: the charging post (where the
charging EV cable is located) and the Supercharger cabinet (usually situated farther away, housing all the power electronics).
Over the past two years, Tesla has been deploying new
charging stations, referring to them as "V4 Superchargers." However, the deployed stations only included the charging post component. These so-called new "V4 Superchargers" were actually using V3 Supercharger cabinets, without any cabinet upgrades. This limited the power output of the charging posts to 250 kW.
Now, Tesla has finally introduced the "V4 Supercharger cabinet" to match its naming, reportedly capable of delivering up to 500 kW of charging power for cars and 1.2 MW for Semi trucks. This marks a new era in electric vehicle charging technology.
Key Features of Tesla's V4 Cabinet:
The V4 Supercharger cabinet not only enhances charging speed but also offers greater compatibility and scalability. It supports vehicle architectures ranging from 400V to 1000V, including Tesla’s own Cybertruck, delivering charging speeds 30% faster than traditional methods. Meanwhile, for Tesla's S3XY lineup, the V4 cabinet can provide the same 250 kW charging rate as the V3 cabinet, enabling these models to gain approximately 321.87 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes.
The V4 cabinet also demonstrates greater efficiency and flexibility in design and deployment. Each cabinet can power up to 8 charging posts, doubling the capacity compared to its predecessor. This not only reduces the footprint but also simplifies infrastructure, enabling more charging stations to be brought online faster.
The V4 Supercharger cabinet incorporates cutting-edge power electronics, designed to deliver the most reliable charging solution worldwide. Its power density has been tripled, enabling higher charging throughput while maintaining low costs.
